Song Review: Nothing But Thieves – Welcome to the DCC

Have you ever wanted to join an exclusive members-only club? Well, then the Essex-born alt-rock group Nothing But Thieves might have just the thing for you. But beware, everything may not be exactly as it seems.

Almost two years after their last release – the second, extended version of their banger album ‘Moral Panic’ – five-piece band Nothing But Thieves have broken through the surface once more with a surprise return and their new single ‘Welcome to the DCC’. Following a series of teasers online that featured invitations to a members-only club called “Dead Club City” and a send-out of real leaflets to excited fans, the bouncy track sets the scene for a new chapter in the group’s musical journey. Giving a nod to dance tracks from the 80s and embedded in funky synths and roaring guitar riffs, the punchy hit sets foot in a new soundscape for the band – one that was previously introduced by ‘Moral Panic’ outliers ‘There Was Sun’ and ‘Moral Panic’, which saw the British bunch dip their toes into more electronically-led sonics.

But, of course, it wouldn’t be a Nothing But Thieves release without an underlying story that ties it all together. For this one, however, the now London-based quintet decided to take it one step further, creating their very first concept album titled ‘Dead Club City’, which is set to hit the airwaves on the 7th of July. Acting as the alluring advertisement for the full-length record, ‘Welcome to the DCC’ stands as an introduction to the world and LP, whose tracklist, according to the band, will be formed by different characters and story arcs from in and around the city.

Speaking on themes such as commercialism, unity, internet culture, the music industry, ageing and politics, as well as escapism and change, the forthcoming eleven-track strong long-player will once more see the striking group shine a light on the societal issues they are all too familiar with, underscored by the alienation and privilege of a members-only club.

Over the years, the young rockers have become known for continuously changing their sound, while still staying grounded in their signature bellowing riffs, honest and gut-wrenching lyrics, addictive beats and singer Conor Mason’s honey-sweet vocals. Leaning into a more electronic, upbeat side of themselves, ‘Welcome to the DCC’ has the alt group take a step into a new direction, and with more surprises waiting just around the corner, we already cannot wait for what more there is to come.
