After a bit of a break following the release of the extended deluxe version of their latest album ‘Dead Club City’ in 2024, British alt-rock quintet Nothing But Thieves have returned with their new single ‘Evolution’ and are taking their listeners right back to the start.
The anthemic track, which glimmers with the magic of a song that could open (or close) a main stage set at festivals all over the world this summer, saw the popular five-piece reconnect with their roots, literally and thematically, as it was recorded at Angelic Studios – the very same studio in which the group also brought their self-titled debut album to life. This came after the band had taken some well-deserved time away from the spotlight to reflect, go inwards, and think back to their DIY beginnings, as they explain: “We’ve spent some time trying to work out what’s real and tangible about who we are and how we use our time. The people we travel the world with, the human moments on stage, and the connection we make with those who come to our shows. That’s real. It’s a bit of a love letter to the people in our world in that way.”
In typical Nothing But Thieves fashion, the marvellous single, dripping with nostalgia and a sense of hope, was showcased at the shoot of its music video in front of 250 excited fans in London (which is set to be premiered next week), alongside millions of fans all around the globe as part of a YouTube livestream. Because if there is one thing that has always been on the top of the list of priorities for the UK-based group, it’s the connection with their fans – and taking things as they are when it feels right, even if they’re not perfect, as they share: “It’s a song that’s not too concerned about finality. Imperfection and authenticity are becoming ever more valuable, and it’s definitely something we’re drawn to.”
Offering a first taste for what is yet to come, ‘Evolution’ stands as yet another chapter of Nothing But Thieves’ already extensive discography and adds one more string to their bow, while still staying true to their trademark sound, their listeners have come to love.
