Album Review: Megan Thee Stallion – Good News

Combine the most interesting rap act coming out of the last few years with retro rap beats and a crispy flow and it results in one of the best albums 2020 has to offer. Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘Good News’ provides the ultimate fun experience whilst coincidentally showing off that she has the ability to create a record that will stay relevant for a long time.

This past year Megan has shocked the world with stellar collabs. Most noticeably the one with Beyoncé on her track ‘Savage’ that is featured on her debut album. That track isn’t the only one that left a permanent mark in the public’s opinion, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion ‘WAP’ not only created a viral TikTok challenge but is also the first Billboard top 100 nr 1 hit for both Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion.

In ‘Good News’ Megan tries to spread positivity in a year that has been so bleak that it needed a pick-me-up. However, this doesn’t mean that she shies away from important topics. In ‘Shots Fired’ she alludes to the Tory Lanez shooting incident with “I know you want the clout, so I ain’t sayin’ y’all names,”, whilst also calling for justice for Breonna Taylor “Now here we are, 2020, eight months later and we still ain’t got no fuckin’ justice for Breonna Taylor,”. The duality of the Houston native is best presented in ‘Sugar Baby’. Throughout the song, she claims her own sexuality and the power she has all the while poking fun at all the potential relationships she might have and how they can be with her.

In her debut record, we see Megan Thee Stallion featuring several other artists yet no one ever outshines her. ‘Cry Baby’ with DaBaby and ‘Freaky Girls’ with SZA proof to be stand-out songs that compliment her artistry. The power of using megastars like Beyoncé and still coming out to be the star of the production let us know that Megan Pete professionally known as Megan Thee Stallion is here to stay and impress the world even more.

The 17 songs provide 50 minutes of sunshine and pleasure. Listening to the entire album without a smile creeping up is simply impossible. Therefore Megan Thee Stallion has excelled what she set out to do, not only to make her fans happy but to create such a well-deserved hype that no one in the world can ever deny her talent anymore.
